Ahead of the release of Gorillaz 9th studio album, 'The Mountain', we took a poll over the Back to Mono Records Facebook page to find out which of Gorillaz many, many incredible tracks was your favourite. With 25 years of material and as mentioned, nine albums to choose from, it was a polarising question and the most popular vote actually swung back and forth between a few different options.
However, with a massive 33% of the vote...
THE WINNER IS: ON MELANCHOLY HILL
With contention from some of Gorillaz more renowned hits like their debut single 'Clint Eastwood', 'Feelgood Inc' or even brand new modern classic 'Orange County', it may seem a surprise that 'On Melancholy Hill' would end up as the winner, but then, considering it's touching lyrics, haunting backing vocals and a layered track featuring strings, synths and a steady and deliberate beat, making this third album gem one of their strongest works. It's my personal favourite and I certainly belonged to the 33% that voted for it to win.
The beauty of the song is only increased on live versions, as Damon Albarn always manages to provide a penetrating performance, no more so than when performing on Jools Holland in 2020, where his gaze directly into the camera accompanied by the sentimental and vulnerable lyrics appeared to take on a whole new power.
'The Mountain' is out now and available on 12 inch yellow vinyl from Back To Mono Records in Lincoln, so go and get your copy now to see if you'll find your brand new favourite from Gorillaz.
